About Me

My photo
Dear friends, We began this blog in the summer of 2012 when our family was called to step "out" of our "normal" life as we lived it in Carrollton Texas and serve for 3 months at Housesofhope.org orphanage in Zacapa, Guatemala. A simple blog for our friends and family to stay in touch during our short journey. Since that season we have decided we will use this as a means to continue to log our journey, share our stories and create a platform to champion what inspires us. We hope you enjoy and pray that you are encouraged into action and deeper reflection on family and faith.

Typing with Wil (and steve)

(wil)   we are going to post pics later.
We made it to the campus.  It is 10:17a.m right now on Easter Sunday but it feels like 2:00pm.  I was sick for the past few days.  There seems to be a virus floating around the campus.  Peter Bell got the virus first,  and it has hit 3 people so far.  It is 80 degrees now, and about 20 degrees hotter here than in Texas, and still climbing.  We are just starting to add all of our appliances in house 6.  82 degrees now.  We brought some hockey sticks down here as a surprise.  we brought them because we were tired of being beat at soccer.  It turns out they love hockey, and they play it every day now.  By the end of 3 months, they will be better than us at even that.  we are working on getting internet at each house right now.  we are going to use there old routers they have.  they have 2 mac book airs and two Ipad2"s.  and the only way they can use the ipads is if they go down to the coffee shop.  And the mac they have to plug in this "Claro" stick I'm using now.   See you guys in 67 days.
Type to you guys soon,
wil

Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn't learn a lot today, at least we learned a little, and if we didn't learn a little, at least we didn't get sick, and if we got sick, at least we didn't die; so, let us all be thankful.

(steve) When we arrived Friday afternoon, all the kids came and made quick work of unloading the trucks. That evening, we had dominos pizza for dinner :) then we went with Pastor German to colonial mitch for a childrens church service he does there on Fridays. The bed felt good Friday.
On Saturday we jumped into campus clean up day. wowza that was a fast initiation. While the ladies worked on a major cleaning project to prepare the new baby house, the boys cleaned out some brush around the lagoon and burned it. We now look like we wrestled with a herd of cats and lost badly. Today after the 5:30am sunrise service we had coffee with Gloria and Raul. They speak Korean fluently, Spanish well, and English none. We spent a couple hours talking, pointing, drawing, and mostly talking about anything and nothing-It was great. Jeana saw a bird fly past the window a took a picture. Turns out it was an owl...no one could believe we saw an owl and until we showed the photo, we were the loco gringos. The campus is busy with activity now. Everyone has stuff to do always. Wade and James fashioned a fishing pole with some string and safety pin and attempted to catch the small fish in the lagoon. They found a turtle and several frogs. I'm trying to figure an attack plan for my list. Its amazing that something as simple as putting light bulbs in sockets can be a project. Need a ladder for that one, a taller one for that one, ladder won't fit in the closet-stack something up to stand on, on and on. So after getting half of the light bulbs in we decided to try and connect one of the outside water faucets so we could connect a hose for watering. 2 hours later and I'm still working on what would be a 15 minute project at home. 4 people have tried to help and left to go get "something I needed" and they never come back. I'm figuring that is code for "your on your own". Somehow everything gets done sooner or later all the while the project list keeps growing. I am amazed at the harmony of teamwork and the tenacity of effort day after day of these dedicated servants. We are having a community meal tonight after the 5pm church service so Jeana and Sarah are busy making cakes. Hope they have better luck than I had with the water faucet and light bulb project. We are planning to go back to Guatemala City tues or wed to pick up the rest of the bunk beds and also turn the childrens 2nd semester grades into the ministero de educaion. Why they can't be emailed...no clue. Hope you Easter is blessed and you are resting well in the knowledge that He is Risen!
